2014 is going to be a great year for Falling Waters State Park. The long awaited plans to renovate the campground facilities and major improvements to the park trail system will soon come to fruition. Unfortunately all these improvements will take place during the designated time for the Legends & Lore Festival. We apologize to all the demonstrators, vendors and visitors that look forward to this event every year. We are currently looking at other options for events in 2014 and look forward to a new and refreshed Legends & Lore Festival in the spring of 2015.
Nestled on the rolling hills of Washington County, Florida is a place filled with natural wonders and a rich cultural history. Falling Waters State Park was established in 1962 to preserve what is considered one of Florida's most unique geological features but the park is so much more. Over the next five decades Falling Waters State Park has added many amenities and to this day continues to improve. The parks improvements can be attributed to the dedicated staff that continue to strive to make this state park one of the best. However, in recent years the local community has become more involved with assisting in preserving and protecting one of the Florida's panhandle hidden treasure. To this end, the Friends of Falling Waters & Ponce deLeon Springs State Park was formed to work with park staff to improve all aspects of the park.
The Friends organization funds interpretive programs for school groups and the public, native plant restorations, exhibit construction, summer day camps, and community education events.
Friends accomplishes their goals through the work of dedicated volunteers and members, the generosity of individuals and business donors, and through grants. Raymond Smoker was a big part of the success of the Legends and Lore Festival. Every year he would come with his horse and work tirelessly from sun up to sun down to make sure every guest to the park had a memorable and enjoyable time.
He was lost to us this year while working with horses and helping others. He is a great loss to our event and the community as a whole. He will be missed.
